Guide to Starting a Business
Below, you’ll find the key steps to starting your business in Tamarac. From registering your business and obtaining the necessary licenses to securing permits and ensuring zoning compliance, we provide clear, easy-to-follow guidance to help you navigate each phase of the process with confidence.
Step 1: obtain a Zoning vERIFICATION
You’ve found the perfect spot for your business, but before you sign that lease, you need to make sure it’s a good fit.
To do this, fill out the Business One Stop Shop (B.O.S.S.) form. This allows the city to confirm that the location is zoned for your type of business and checks for any existing issues, like open permits or code violations. It’s a simple step to ensure everything’s in order before you commit to the space.
Step 2: apply for a business tax receipt
Now that you’ve secured your location, the next step is applying for a Commercial Business Tax Receipt. You can download the form for either a commercial or home-based business here. Keep in mind that each type of business has specific requirements, so be sure to follow the correct process.
For a commercial business tax receipt, you’ll need to provide:
- Zoning approval (make sure Step 1 is complete!)
- Driver’s license or another form of photo ID
- Copy of a garbage contract (may be required depending on your business type)
- Broward County Occupational License (this is required after receiving the Tamarac license and can be obtained at 115 S Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL; 954-831-4000)
- If using a fictitious name, it must be registered with the Department of State and advertised in a local newspaper. Be sure to include a copy with your application.
- If your business is a corporation, include a copy of your corporate documents.
Step 3: aPPLY FOR A SAFETY PERMIT/CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCCY
Before you can receive your Commercial Business Tax Receipt (Step 2), you’ll need to apply for and receive a Safety Permit/Certificate of Occupancy. This step ensures your business location complies with safety and building standards.
To apply, work with the Building Department. This is required for all commercial businesses, and the permit must be approved before you can move forward with your Business Tax Receipt. You can apply through Tamarac’s ePermits system or contact the Building Department for assistance at 954-597-3420.
Step 4: schedule and pass inspections
After applying for your Safety Permit/Certificate of Occupancy, the next step is to schedule inspections. These inspections are required to ensure that your business location complies with safety, building, and zoning regulations.
You’ll need to work with the Building Department to schedule and pass the necessary inspections. Once all inspections are completed and approved, you’ll be one step closer to receiving your Business Tax Receipt and starting your operations.
Step 5: receive safety permit/certificate of occupancy
Once you’ve successfully scheduled and passed all required inspections, you will receive your Safety Permit/Certificate of Occupancy. This confirms that your business location meets all necessary safety and building standards.
With this permit in hand, you can now move forward to obtain your Commercial Business Tax Receipt and officially begin your business operations!
Step 6: receive business tax receipt
Once you’ve received your Safety Permit/Certificate of Occupancy, you’ll be issued your Commercial Business Tax Receipt. This officially authorizes you to operate your business in Tamarac.
Be sure to post your Business Tax Receipt in a visible location at your storefront, as it is required by the city. With everything in place, you’re now ready to begin your business operations!
